Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that relocates healthy hair follicles from one area of your scalp (the donor site: the back or sides of your head) to an area where you are experiencing hair loss, to provide natural-looking, permanent coverage. For some people, a single hair transplant may be enough to produce satisfying results; others will require multiple sessions. During the hair transplantation process, you will be under local anaesthetic for your comfort and safety. This isn’t a sign of failure but rather that the hair is entering its natural growth cycle.
Most patients can return to their daily activities a few days after the procedure. However, you will need to be careful with the transplanted hair and avoid combing or brushing it too vigorously for several weeks, as the follicles need to be left alone to survive. You’ll also be given a spray to use to help with recovery and encourage hair growth.
Pain following the procedure is minimal and can be managed with over-the-counter medication like paracetamol or ibuprofen. Some swelling of the face and scalp is common, but this will usually settle down within a few days. Some crusting or small scabs may be present on the treatment areas, which can be removed gently by hand. Vigorous exercise should be avoided, as it can cause a build-up of blood in the treatment areas and lead to increased post-procedure swelling.
